There’s no better time to get out and explore the Miami Valley than along The Great Miami Riverway.
“The Great Miami Riverway is a regional destination in southwest Ohio that includes more than 99 miles of river flowing through communities where you can surf the river, cycle the bike trails, and find your way through charming downtowns,” explains Sarah Hippensteel Hall, Manager of Watershed Partnerships at the Miami Conservancy District.
The idea behind The Great Miami Riverway came from a passion to showcase the charming riverfront communities that sit along it, highlight the region’s abundant outdoor recreation opportunities, and bring more visitors to the area’s one-of-a-kind attractions.
“The Riverway is more than just a river – is it the corridor of cities and counties along the Great Miami River in southwest Ohio,” adds Hippensteel Hall.
The Great Miami Riverway starts in Sidney, north of Dayton. It then flows through Piqua, Troy, Tipp City, Dayton, West Carrollton, Miamisburg, Franklin, Middletown, Hamilton, and Hamilton County.
Activities along these riverfront communities include abundant opportunities for river recreation sports, paddling, and kayaking.
The Great Miami River is the best river in the state for smallmouth bass fishing, according to Hippensteel Hall. Other activities include sleeping in tents floating on the river, the Great Miami River Recreation Bike Trial and its connection to 300+ miles of paved trail system, plenty of choices for foodies and beer lovers, the Air Force Museum, Wright Brothers attractions, and special sites including the WACO Air Museum.
“Visitors can even learn to skydive at the #1 Drop Zone in the world,” says Hippensteel Hall. “Or, you can keep your feet on the ground and visit the local shops of charming riverfront towns.”
