The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati

Introduce your littles to the theater with local programming from The Children's Theatre of Cincinnati!

Since 1919 The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati (TCT) has been creating lifelong memories for children, schools, and families.

“Our acclaimed productions are the perfect first live theatre experience for children but enjoyed by audiences of all ages,” says TCT Sales and Marketing Director Krista Katona Pille.

The history of The Children’s Theatre goes back to Helen Schuster-Martin and the Schuster-Martin School of the Drama.

“Ms. Schuster-Martin coined the name ‘The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati’ and began directing and writing productions for young audiences,” explains Katona Pille. “After receiving the author’s permission, she wrote ‘The Adventures of Peter Rabbit: A Play in Three Acts,’ dramatized from the bedtime stories by Thornton Burgess. It was copywriter and perfect in 1919, per the 1919 Catalog of Copyright Entries, as well as a historic letter of publicity. She also adapted ‘The Adventures of Sammy Jay,’ which TCT performed in 1921, per “The Playground, Community Service” publication.”

Throughout the theater’s history, they’ve gone through radio productions and seen their fair share of stars. In fact, Katona Pille says notable students included American radio actress Virginia Payne, matinee idol Tyrone Power, and screen star Doris Day.

“We owe a great debt of thanks to Helen Schuster-Martin,” says Katona Pille. “This incredible, trailblazing woman started TCT on its journey to where we are today and our path toward tomorrow.”

Today TCT focuses on providing programming to children and school groups. The fall session will feature many different types of performing arts classes for children ages 4-18.

“TCT Academy offers performing arts instruction from a professional theatre company, introducing children to all elements of live theatre, incorporating educational aspects as well as important life skills and milestones,” adds Katona Pille.

She also says that participating in classes with TCT isn’t just about learning how to sing, dance, or act. “It’s about gaining confidence, learning life skills, and keeping your children active,” she says.
