If you want to stay in shape and have fun, Dayton Sportical is the organization for you.
“Dayton Sportical is a sport and social organization for adults in Dayton and surrounding areas,” explains Joe Swann social media coordinator. “We offer a variety of sports leagues, tournaments, and special events in and near downtown Dayton.”
The mission behind the founding of Dayton Sportical was to create something that would connect others while building community through fun and games. Founders PF Falter and Raph Carranza launched Dayton Sportical in 2015 after playing on a softball team together.
“PJ and Raph wanted to continue playing together in another league that was more social rather than competitive, and discovered a previous organization like that in Dayton had closed,” says Swann. “They wanted to revive that idea knowing that the best way to make new friends was through fun and games.”
Oftentimes, adult recreation leagues tend to get a little competitive. But Dayton Sportical wants to change that.
“After every kickball game, teams go to a local bar where we have party games set up for them and they can earn additional overall points in the league,” adds Swann. “We love to see everyone having fun, letting loose, and carrying on the connections they’ve made long after whatever league they’re in has ended.”
There are a number of sports currently available at Dayton Sportical. There is intermediate and beginner tennis, corn hole, beer die, pickle ball, euchre, indoor volleyball, bowling, and kickball. Kickball at Dayton Sportical is the biggest sport and features three different leagues that go on throughout the summer. Swann says this past summer included a total of 34 teams, the most they’ve ever had.
Swann says that it’s the connection building and focus on fun that makes Dayton Sportical stand out from other adult recreation leagues. “We focus on sports that are not mainstream, so that people are put at ease, don’t fear embarrassment, and can let go and have fun,” he says.
The motto of “channel your inner 4th grader, forget about work and play harder” is key at Dayton Sportical. “As we grow older, we want to make sure everyone’s inner kid lives on,” he adds.
Dayton Sportical travels throughout Dayton for its sports leagues. Tennis is held at the Kettering Tennis Center while beer die is at Double 18 Lounge. Additionally, cornhole is at Yellow Cab Taven, pickle ball is at the downtown YMCA, euchre is at Flyboy’s Deli in downtown, indoor volleyball is at the Greater Dayton Recreation Center, bowing is as Poelking Lanes in Wilmington, and kickball is held at a number of locations around the area.
