Chic Spotlight: Ordinarie Fare

Check out this plant-forward food business offering salads, sauces and more.

The Chic Guide: What is Ordinarie Fare?
Katie Mathews, Founder of Ordinarie Fare: Ordinarie Fare is a plant-forward food business in Dayton, OH specializing in gluten-free, vegan, and whole-food fare, from baked goods to raw treats to a variety of plant-forward salads, sauces, and more. All of our fare is 100% gluten-free, vegan, and made without any refined sugars, flours, or artificial ingredients. Plants are amazing!

The Chic Guide: What’s the inspiration behind it?
Mathews: The inspiration behind Ordinarie Fare comes from our time living on the West Coast, devouring all the stunning plant-fare we could find, and also my own complex journey with food throughout the years. As someone with food sensitivities, the struggle to find gluten-free, vegan, and unprocessed products that really delight the palate AND nourish the body is real. And, as a woman in today’s culture who is tired of the shame game around food and body, I also wanted to make wholesome fare that wasn’t about a diet or deprivation, but rather delight, fullness, and satisfaction. I am inspired and driven each day by those passions, and I’m really delighted by what we have brought to the the allergy-friendly and plant-forward food scene in Dayton.

The Chic Guide: Who’s behind it?
Mathews: I am founder and creator behind Ordinarie Fare. I’m a 30-year old mom of two who has dreamed of having her own bakery since she was 13. When I’m not baking, you can find me on my yoga mat, or playing with my kids, because let’s be real, what working mom has time for much else?

The Chic Guide: What’s on the menu at Ordinarie Fare?
Mathews: Our best selling item is still our original product, our chunky, oatmeal cookie-esque granola. Our baked items often include a rotating flavor of grain-free pop tarts and a variety of cookies and bars. Our raw treats always include a seasonal flavor of our beloved raw cinnabun, alongside things like raw donut holes and cashew cheesecakes. The highlight of our savory offerings would be our tossed kale salads that have made a kale lover out of many skeptics, and our herbed cashew cheese that is creamy, versatile, and delicious.

The Chic Guide: What makes Ordinarie Fare unique?
Mathews: Our tag line is “plant-forward foods for mindful delight”. It feels really important to me that we focus on high-quality plant ingredients while also allowing for bio-individuality and personal preference in the diet, which is why we use “plant-forward” rather than “plant-based”. We are not forcing a diet or lifestyle on anyone — we just want to offer the most nourishing food for all, whether they eat meat or gluten or cheese or not. A focus on mindful delight is also an energy behind our work that I believe makes us unique. Mindfulness at the meal is rare in our fast-paced culture, and delight is rare in our diet-laden culture. To bring both mindfulness and delight back to the table feels like a purpose that can make a difference. Mindful, nourished people can be a healing balm for so much that hurts right now.

The Chic Guide: Is there anything new on the horizon?
Mathews: Yes! We’re excited to share that beginning in January of 2022, our fare will be regularly available at the Carrs and Co Photography House on Third Street downtown. We will be set up there several days each week right next to the new Reduce Reuse Refillery retail space, and will be hosting classes and events from time to time in the space as well. It feels like the next step on our journey to our own little storefront! Follow us on social media for updates on how and when to get your weekly fare when that time comes!

The Chic Guide: Where are you located?
Mathews: Right now, you can order on our website for Centerville or Oakwood Saturday pickup, or find us at our scheduled pop-ups. But starting at the end of January, you can find us several times each week at the Carrs and Co Photography House on Third Street downtown with Reduce Reuse Refillery!

The Chic Guide: Where can readers go to learn more and follow along?
Mathews: We are most active on Instagram and we love chatting with our customers there! Or you can go to our website to place an order or view our upcoming event schedule.
