Chic Spotlight: Barn + House + Shed

A family-owned farm is repurposing history in a way that brings nature and beauty into your home.

The Chic Guide: What is Barn + House + Shed?
Al, Founder and Owner of Barn + House + Shed: Barn + House + Shed is a small business located in Sparta, Kentucky, selling houseplants, handmade planters and salvaged wood artwork.

The Chic Guide: What’s the inspiration behind it?
Al: Sitting up on a hill at the family farm is an old tobacco barn that has been converted into a horse barn. Inside, thousands of tobacco sticks have sat in a pile for years, no longer used for their intended purpose. From year to year, a few would make their way to the garden to support the top-heavy tomato plants or brace a new tree planted in the yard. I was inspired to find a way to repurpose these pieces of history in a way that brought both nature and beauty into the homes of others. Expanding to add plants and planters was a natural next step in our journey to bring nature indoors.

The Chic Guide: Who’s behind it?
Al: I do a lot of the creative work myself with support from my family. My son provides design ideas, my mom helps manage sales and marketing, and my dad often lends a hand with the heavy lifting.

The Chic Guide: What types of products can readers purchase?
Al: We currently offer a variety of houseplants, concrete planters, and wood artwork. We also love to do custom pieces and are often asked to use someone’s own wood from their farm when creating their piece!

The Chic Guide: What makes Barn + House + Shed unique?
Al: Every piece of artwork is hand made from salvaged tobacco sticks, barn wood and horse fence from farms right here in Kentucky. The wood is then arranged to achieve a one-of-a-kind mix in color, texture and character that you just can’t get anywhere else.

The Chic Guide: Is there anything new on the horizon?
Al: We are working on something exciting! Check back with us in a few months.

The Chic Guide: Where can readers go to learn more and follow along?
Al: You can learn more about Barn + House + Shed on Instagram and on Etsy.
