As a young girl, I remember standing watching my grandmother make homemade biscuits from scratch. A mess of flour, Crisco, sugar and butter polluted her usually clean tiny Northside kitchen counter, not unlike an artist with their paints and brushes. This is when I came to understand that cooking is an artform. Thirty years later I still remember how her biscuits tasted- exactly like love. Jordan Hamons of Tablespoon Cooking Co. wants to share this artform with home cooks of all skill levels, teaching them how to cook good food through hands-on cooking classes and culinary events.
Jordan Hamons is a classically-trained chef, cooking teacher and food and beverage consultant. Her experience includes working as a professional corporate chef, private chef and caterer. Jordan loves to travel – learning international cooking techniques and sampling food from around the globe.
Before completing her culinary training at Midwest Culinary Institute, Jordan graduated from the Lindner Honors-PLUS Program at the University of Cincinnati Lindner College of Business. Jordan’s business background has been crucial to launching her newest project, a new Tablespoon storefront location in the heart of Cincinnati’s Over-The-Rhine Findlay Market.
When asked about highlights in her career journey, Hamons said “I’m most proud of my persistence and perseverance. There have been many challenges in the last few years (building out storefront, the pandemic) that often seemed unsurmountable. I’m proud that I stayed the course and kept going, when sometimes I wanted to give up.”
We’re also grateful that she’s kept going. Jordan has become a leader in Cincinnati’s food scene, offering amazing cooking opportunities for adults and children alike (check out Tablespoon Kids Camps!). Each class kicks off with a healthy Crunchmaster snack to keep you fueled through your class!
How does she build resilience to move forward despite challenges? “I read every night before bed” said Jordan. “This helps me turn my brain off and go to sleep.” Sleep is crucial for renewal and over 35% of Americans say they get less than the recommended 7 hours per night.
Sleep, along with staying hydrated and working out at Trilogy Fitness are some of the core aspects of Jordan’s daily wellness routine. “Working out at Trilogy has been the pillar of my wellness for the last several years. They keep me strong, positive and confident.”
If you make the trip to Findlay Market be sure to keep an eye out for Hamons- you won’t see her without a notebook, bright lipstick and a cookbook en tow! Be sure to Follow Jordan’s experiences on her culinary travel blog, The Hungry Traveler and check out upcoming classes at Tablespoon Cooking Co.
In part 2 of Jordan’s story she will share her strengths and opportunity areas of personal wellness to inspire others to invest in themselves.
